My energy levels since the retreat are greatly improved - Kal
Weight Loss : Weight Gain : Wait A Minute! Why Doesn't The Calorie Argument Work For Me(It only seems to work for a while for anyone!) Like most scientific ideas, the old Calorie theory has been banded about for decades without being checked against more modern ideas, to see if it actually true. It looks great on paper, and the balance of energy complies all the standard physics arguments. But just because it is a great window for looking at how the body uses energy, does not mean it has the answer for all physiological routines around food. The short version is : Modern Foods = Fermentation = Toxins = Toxin Storage in Fat CellsWe can see how the system processes foods that we are designed to eat by looking at the Digestion Page, but who eats those things anymore! Honestly, who lives a stress-free life, on leaves and fruit in our fast food world. That is not to say that we should or shouldn't be living as we do. But everything has a cost. The More Rules of Nature We Break, The Greater The CostAnd that IS sound science. All we are pointing to here is a set of choices that we make, and highlighting the consequences, which you are probably unaware of. No judgments, no morals, just cause and effect. But you probably won't like it: because it puts you back in the responsibility seat, not your doctor, not your genetic code, nor the food industry, YOU (and ME). The Body's Call For NutrientsThe body's tasting mechanism is finely tuned to receive information during the chewing process. With this information, it will fire up all the appropriate digestive machinery to process the best out of our food. Of primary concern is the energy content, because without that, no other chemical or mechanical process can go on. Sugar Is Nutrient Number One: For Its Energy ContentThe struggle against the body's instinct to survive is futile. It will get its energy from somewhere. And if you deny it sugars it will go to the next best source - Fats, and then proteins. These food components can be burned to give us energy, but they are neither efficient or effective. They take lots of energy to get their energy out, and leave a terrible mess to be cleaned up afterward. Sugars are clean, pollution-free fuel. If you satisfy the body's cravings for sugar with fruits - the source that evolution has designed it to look for and use, then the problems are minimal. When you start interpreting the call for fruit, as a call for chocolate, then all hell WILL break lose - eventually. Most of the sugars we eat today are refined and water soluble from the moment they are ingested. They have nothing to inhibit their movement straight into the blood-stream, and thus end up stimulating the Pancreas to calm this sugar explosion via the insulin mechanism (which was never designed to take such stress). A Bacterial Field DayWe can have around 80% good bacteria in our bowel digesting our food for us, and producing nutrients in the process. however, we modern humans tend to have around only 20% good guys, and 80% 'other' varieties that generate toxins instead of nutrients, and generally play havoc with the immune system. Our good bacteria, which have been in us since we had a bowel have been engineered through evolution to expect the long-slow release of fruit sugars from a fibrous meal. They are knocked aside in the frenzy of other bacteria happy to proliferate on the sugar explosion that refined sugars release. Thus the resulting bi products are not nutrients, but toxins, that must all be eliminated or stored somewhere. The bowel becomes sluggish if too much fiberless fermentation goes on, and so the elimination of these wastes is inhibited. The lungs, skin, sinuses, etc, can be used in an attempt to shed the amassing mess, but ultimately, we end up storing this matter, in the hope that one day in the future, enough rest and reprieve will occur to allow us to reverse this process and detoxify our body. We shouldn't need to specifically detoxify, but that is the reason we do. And if we don't... ? Our Evolutionary Back PackThe storage of this toxic material causes havoc with the efficiency of whichever organ is selected for the job (usually the weakest). They can all hold toxicity and acidity in their own way, allowing the blood to remain slightly alkaline and relatively thin, so that you may survive. But again, there is a cost to storing toxins in areas that already have a use.
Fat Cells Are The Most Effective Toxin StoreBecause we have spent the last few million years as tropical primates, where nutrients are super abundant and a lack thereof just does not happen, we have not used the energy-storing capacity of our fat reserves, for a very long time. We have to trace our lineage back out of the forests and into the temperate zones once again where we are closer to bears than monkeys - that is the last time our inherent fat mechanism was used to store foodstuff to sustain the long, desert-like winters. And so, if the storage of toxins in any organ system lowers its efficiency, then perhaps we should (and do) chose to store this toxin matter in a system we no longer use for anything else. Much research is pointing to this conclusion these days, as the old calorific argument has had some pretty major holes blown in it lately. Further supporting this argument is the well-known fact now that toxins get condensed and travel up the food chain in the fat stores of the creatures that carry it. Many of the toxins we are addressing here are easily held in fats, suspended away from the blood flow and hormonal loops that they would play havoc with. Worth noting here also, is how the critical pH balance of the blood is. It has a very small pH window which must be held very precisely, and the body will throw off excess acids from the blood into the muscles and fats cells directly. See pH Balance Organophosphates from farming, pharmaceutical medicines, industrial wastes, heavy metals, even detergents and shampoos, have been found in ever-increasing concentrations as you travel up from the plant realms, and into animal and then human groups. A Whole Bushel of Apples Will Not Put Weight On You Like A Single Donut !!Our closest relatives - the highest apes (Gorillas, Orang Utans, and Benobo Chimps) eat a very calorie rich diet, and are on the whole pretty lazy creatures. They do not put on an ounce, and nor will you if you are eating what they eat, because apples and figs do not ferment nearly as readily as apple pie. They are little skinny guys too, and yet 7 to 10 times stronger than us - with very little protein in the diets. However, if you feed them the London Zoo diet - plenty of fruit, and then a cup of Horlicks "for the protein that's in it", then they get fat, and die of our diseases. Live By The Burger, Die By The BurgerEnough experiments have been performed nowadays to show that we are designed to eat as apes do, for the simple reason that we are apes. Failing to do so has its consequences, and one of those consequences is that the shortfall in nutrients will keep us searching for them (over-eating), and the over-production of toxins (from fermentation instead of digestion) will cause us to become congested (heart disease, high BP & Cholesterol), liver failure, stones, organ cysts, arthritis, foul BO, etc., and of course) leading to fat deposits being used to store toxins. How The Detox Retreat Works For Weight Loss PsychologicallyYou will be forgiven for thinking that starvation is not the answer to weight loss. this dangerous mentality leads people into anorexia when it is associated with misguided principles about beauty and deservedness. The body's physical response to a lack of food is to go through all he old junk in the system, and start to burn what it can, and discard the rest. This is the process of Catabolism, as opposed to metabolism, and it IS the process of detoxification that we are looking for. It is NOT starvation! The majority of the weight lost is not the fat reserves themselves, but what they were carrying - toxic debris from faulty food choices. On average, we find that people lose around 10 lbs in weight (some nothing at all, other up to 2 stone). This is misleading as figure in itself, as they will be more hydrated than at any other time in their lives, and as water is heavier than fat, much more is lost. However, upon eating again, the sheer weight of food will replace 2 or 3 lbs of that. This is NOT the point, because the body will quickly replace those freshly unburdened fat stores with new ones unless the food choices have changed. This is where the educational side of the retreats come in. The psychological aspects will have had their chance to be aired in the setting of either private consultations with our crew, or less direct interactions within the group setting. Much of the emotional content of food gets discussed throughout the week, and many patterns are looked at just through the process of fasting itself, and what arises in that space. this makes them infinitely easier to break, and their rhythm is already disrupted. Understanding The Link Between Fat And Toxins Makes Choices Become More CompleteThe daily talks on retreat are specifically designed not to teach nutritional information (which is mostly useless and guilt-filling), but to prompt people to question things themselves, and to understand the underlying themes behind the examples given. Finally, the science becomes irrelevant, and the obvious basic equation is exposed for all to see: The Further We Drift From What Our Body Is Expecting, The Greater The Workload On UsThis incorporates our whole lifestyle, but of course, there is no time to encompass this here. Great emphasis is placed on the do-ability of the suggestions and dietary tweaks that are advised. And on the whole, our approach is very successful with people How The Detox Retreat Works For Weight Loss PhysiologicallyAs the body rests, it releases it storage more easily. The primary exit is through the bowel, and so we offer self-administered Colonics. A fantastic way of removing any old matter from the bowel wall that is inhibiting elimination. The offending bacteria itself is mostly washed away, and during the daily nutritional talks, much time is devoted to helping people understand the importance of generating friendly bacteria. At the end of the week different methods of reinhabitation are outlined. See further chapters on the benefits of fasting and digestion versus fermentation for greater details. |
